prana /pra·na/ (prah´nah) [Sanskrit] in ayurvedic tradition, the life force or vital energy, the life-breath coming from the sun and connecting the elements of the universe

Ocean Prana prides itself on delivering world class freediving courses in Bali, Indonesia, lead by instructor-trainer Yoram Zekri, who is a former world vice-champion of freediving and French national multi-record holder with more than 27 years of experience in the freediving world.

What Is Freediving?

A note from Yoram Zekri – Freediving Instructor Trainer

One Breath… To Have And To Hold…

Freediving is the art of controlling your breath underwater, which ultimately allows you the freedom to enjoy the beauty and silence of the underwater world.
Let’s face it, life moves fast with our work, our social lives and our commitments all intertwined, keeping us wired.
THIS sport allows us to release all of these life stresses, to immerse ourselves in a world so foreign to us, yet actually when you think about it so close to our origins of being immersed in liquid from the day we were created.

Freediving takes us back to our roots. We bring back that effortless, weightless feeling of being surrounded by water, and with dedicated practice of skills and techniques to improve our lungs amplitude we may consider this sport our “go to” exit from life’s daily stresses. Drawing techniques from yoga and meditation learn to evolve into responsible freedivers.

It is through the art of freediving safely that allows for spear-fishing to reach greater results from fishing dives. Freediving has proven to be an ideal sport-supplement to assist in the physical and mental performance for various other sports, such as surfing, martial-arts, triathlon etc.

Yes, Freediving is a relatively innovative water sport and it is through safe methods and training that it is rapidly becoming a lifestyle exercise of choice.

Join the water shift – glide with us into a new world of being.

Live the blue – One breath – To have and to hold…

He is a scuba diving instructor and multi-certified Freediving Instructor Trainer (AIDA and PADI) for more than 17 years and shares his experience and knowledge in special courses throughout the world.

After developing the sport of Freediving for 15 years in Tahiti – French Polynesia and Sydney – Australia, YORAM ZEKRI has relocated in BALI – INDONESIA and founded OCEAN PRANA.

Yoram’s Philosophy – Why Freedive With This Guy?

Freediving is Yoram’s way of life. Since the age of 12 he believed that this extraordinary sport would catapult him towards a career close to the water… and so his child-hood dream was realized.

To this day Yoram has never stopped his love and passion for Freediving whether it be competing at an elite level or educating around the globe including Tahiti, USA, Canada, Israel, Australia and now Bali.

Upon achieving the Internationally recognized level of Instructor Trainer under AIDA federation, Yoram stands alone as the only Instructor Trainer throughout Australia, and is one of less than 30 Instructor Trainers world-wide.

Yoram’s philosophy on freediving is simple but profound: Safety is paramount!

Anyone can freedive, in fact every instructor can show you techniques to achieve a longer breath-hold, however not everyone freedives responsibly. Yoram always trains and supervises all Ocean Prana’s Instructors and they will no doubt push you to achieve greatness in the water, however at the forefront of his training syllabus is his teaching of quality protocols and standards to ensure the highest level of safety for all freedivers, both recreationally and in competition.

“I gain the most job satisfaction when I witness my students achieve their PB’s and surface ‘clean’. That is the ultimate sign of a successful and responsible freediver. On the other hand, repeatedly pushing oneself to the point of near ‘blackout’ doesn’t make for an authentic sport at all, that is simply the height of neglect and disrespect to your wellbeing. When we free dive safely by understanding the physiology of this sport and through the correct application of safety techniques alongside our safety buddy, only then are we TRUE FREEDIVERS” – Yoram Zekri

Our Education System: What Is AIDA?

AIDA is a Worldwide Federation for breath-hold diving, established in 1992. AIDA manages and oversees the recognition of records, organises competitions ands sets the standars for freedive education. Since 1993, AIDA International has officiated more than 250 Official World Records.

Apart from being the global authority for competitive freediving, AIDA International has over the years become the focal point for development of freediving knowledge and science. Recognising the value of this knowledge for the development of modern freediving, AIDA has created a structured education system and is the World leading freediving organisation dedicated to the safe practice of breath-hold diving in its various forms.

IMPORTANT: Do Not Book Any Freediving Course Unless They Can Answer These Simple Questions

Does your freediving school founder have more that 25 years experience in freediving, including world class competition?
All freediving schools have approximately the same course content regarding the physiology, safety and techniques of freediving… What makes a huge difference between each school is the experience and knowledge of the sport that your instructor can share with you.

With more than 27 years in the world of freediving including 12 years at world level competition and 17 years working as a freediving instructor, Yoram is one of the most experienced freedivers globally and is more than happy to share with you his experiences, himself or though his instructors, including triumphs and failures. By Yoram sharing his experience as a freediver over the past 2 decades will allow you to avoid common traps and unnecessary difficulties of this sport and enable you to enjoy faster and safer progression.
Do they give you a 100% money back guarantee?
We are so confident in the quality of our courses that we are the only freediving school in Bali to guarantee 100% money back if you didn’t enjoy the course or if the quality of our course was below your level of expectation.

Yoram with Surf Professional Manoa Drollet – Tahiti 2012

“I took classes with Yoram to develop and maximise my breath-hold potential and my ease underwater. This course is an essential step for taking on the challenges and goals that I have set for surfing big waves. Without the techniques and tools Yoram shared with me I would not be as confident to throw myself into these surf adventures. I will be happy to continue to work with Yoram as the opportunity arises to maintain these skills.” – Manoa Drollet

Why should I choose OCEAN PRANA to do a Freediving course over and above other courses offered?
OCEAN PRANA focuses on providing professional and personalised courses supervised by former French National and vice world champion Yoram Zekri. With over 20 years of experience in the world of Freediving including teaching, participation in elite competitions and leisure diving around the world, Yoram and his team will encourage you to achieve your personal best in the water, with a strong emphasis on safety protocol to become a responsible freediver.

All Freediving courses generally cover the same content but at the end of the day it really comes down to the extra tips your instructor can arm you with to improve your understanding of the sport and to enhance your dive techniques to improve your craft. Most importantly the experience of your instructor, including both the highs and lows they have encountered will assist in your learning and development.

I am already confident in water. Can I skip the AIDA 1* and do the AIDA 2* straight away?
YES. The AIDA 1* course is an initiation day where you will learn the basics of freediving. This course is the best option for you to start with if you are a complete beginner, as there is no requirement of abilities. If you are already confident in water and if you wish to discover freediving more deeply, you can jump directly to the AIDA 2* course.
I am used to freediving deep to 20m or more. Can I bypass the AIDA 2* and directly begin with the AIDA 3* course?
Unfortunately no. The reason is that depth is not the only principle developed in the AIDA 2* course. There are many other skills to build to become a good freediver, including correct breathing and relaxation techniques, streamlining, recovery time etc. but most of all, practicing freediving in deep or shallow water cannot be an option without proper safety protocol and a good knowledge of rescue techniques.

The AIDA 2* is very comprehensive and teaches you all aspects to become a competent and responsible freediver to progress in your breath-hold time, depth and distance in a safe way.

I am an experienced Spearfisher - why should I do a course?
Even if you have had a lot of experience as a spearfisher, it does not mean you have all the tools needed in order to do it responsibly and safely.

The AIDA 2* introduces the student to the safety rules and rescue techniques, breathing and relaxing techniques, preparation, recovery and more. These tools will enable you to dive deeper, for longer and be more comfortable underwater with appropriate safety protocol.

What kind of certificate will I get at the end of the course?
Upon successful completion of all the requirements of your course you will be awarded an International freediving certification under the AIDA federation. AIDA is the Original and World’s leading Freediving Federation
What equipment do I need to bring for the course?
For all Freediving courses you will need a mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, stop-watch, weight-belt and weights. You can bring your own equipment if you have some, or we can provide everything you need.

For the Surf & Lifesaving breathing workshop you will only need a wetsuit and stopwatch.

What is your payment and cancellation policy?
All courses need to be paid before the start of the course. Through online payment we accept Paypal. If you prefer bank transfer or payment in cash please contact us for details.

Cancellations within 24 hours of the start of the course incurs a 30% fee.

Take A Look At What Some Students Are Saying

“Just wanted to say how awesome the Surf Breathing Workshop was. It was challenging but in the end it has given me a new level of surfing confidence I could not have gained otherwise. The tuition and practical sessions were excellent, well planned and delivered extremely professionally. Thanks again and see you at Squad!”

Grant Hookway

“I originally took up freediving to develop my underwater abilities, after many years of scuba diving, with the main goal of improving my stress management skills when equipment failure occurs. Yoram was not only a brilliant teacher and coach with his attention to detail, focus on technique and safety, and personalised approach, but he has been an inspiration for us regulars as well. I have since been completely hooked on freediving, and even one year later, I find myself still learning new things and reaching new personal bests. And it is so fun! I would absolutely recommend Yoram in a heartbeat and thank him for changing my underwater world.”

Charmaine Tham, Scuba/Cave/Tech & now Freediving enthusiast, started April 2013.

“I thought the course was fantastic. Exactly what I needed and expected. I had my first post-course surf today. It was about 4 foot, which usually would have made me nervous, but I implemented all that I learned and I was the most relaxed I have ever been in that size surf. Great stuff. Thanks.”

Nicholas S, Freshwater, NSW, Australia

“Thanks for a fantastic course. You’ve given me the knowledge to progress safely and confidently. I’ve told all my friends I won’t freedive with them until they have completed a certified freediving course including my wife. A big change from someone who has spent the last 10 years diving mostly alone. The physiology is fascinating and is a huge assistance to staying relaxed. My conclusion is that free diving is more serene than extreme.”

Alistair M, Blairgowrie, VIC, Australia

“Un grand merci pour le weekend ! C’était vraiment génial. J’ai beaucoup apprécié ton enthousiasme et ta capacité de pouvoir bien expliquer les choses.”

Patrick B, South Yarra, VIC, Australia

“I think you are a great teacher/instructor I think you explain everything very well and the structure in witch you present the information is very clear and understandable. I am so happy I did the course and have been diving on the mid north coast the last few days and have had all the people I’m with spotting each other and we ran all rescue drills and stretching before dives. I feel an obligation to inform people about the risks and I won’t feel comfortable diving any other so I thank you greatly. I want to do my next freediving certification in the 2 months and when I return to nsw I would like two join training once a week. Talk soon thank you.”

Sean G, Gosford, NSW, Australia

“Awsome work mate thanks alot for the course. I have learned alot of valuable information which probably saved my life. 10/10”

Blake W, Sanctuary Point, NSW, Australia

“Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I learned a lot of things and wish I had taken this course years ago. I will work towards some small goals and practice my new skills, hopefully see you for my next freediving certification course sometime next year.”

Gian-Luca B, Copacabana, NSW, Australia

“I found the course very helpful learning correct breathing techniques and found the dangers and side affects of hyper ventilation very interesting, I’ve been doing the breathing exercises and training on a daily basis and it has started to feel more natural and the hook breathing has become a reflex. Thanks very much for taking the time to teach my friends and myself your knowledge of free diving”

Jorden H, Ballarat, VIC, Australia.

“Been spearing/free diving for years, but when this course came up near Portland (Sweet Home), I was happy for the opportunity to learn more and hopefully become a better/safer diver…Our AIDA instructor Yoram Zakri was great, highly recommend the experience…”

Ethan S, Portland, Oregon, USA

“For anyone visiting Yoram’s website, and considering taking a class from him, I can say that his training is absolutely top notch and you will not be disappointed. I just finished his AIDA 2 training in Oregon and it went way over the top of my highest expectations. I primarily signed up for this class because of the focus on safety, and Yoram fully delivered on those expectations. He took us through theory, to discussions on what to look for as signs of problems both in yourself and others, to techniques of active and passive security, to practicing in the pool and lake. My confidence in sensing safety issues both with myself and others has skyrocketed, as has my confidence in my abilities to help a person in trouble.
I would suggest that this type of training is essential to diving safely, and recommend Yoram to anyone that is looking to improve both their skills in safety and in performance. I greatly exceeded my own performance expectations in static apnea, dynamic apnea, and constant weight apnea. I could not have done this without his guidance on techniques, both physical and mental.
Thanks again Yoram!”

Kyle M, Portland, Oregon, USA

“If you are still indecisive about taking this class and have the means and time to do so, do not hesitate to call Max or Josh right now. I was the beginner in the class and more then a little apprehensive about taking the class. I was looking to become a safer diver and cut down on some of the lessons that are often learned the hard way. I learned so much it was incredible. Safety was a big part of Yorams instruction and it is something he really cares about. The camaraderie and the setting were added bonuses and made the experience just amazing. Do yourself a favor if you have been thinking about taking this class and do it. You will not regret it. Thanks to Yoram for being a great instructor, probably the best dive instructor I have met by far. What a great experience!”

Shawn C, Tacoma, Oregon, USA

“A big “Merci” to Yoram for his expert instruction, insight and experience into the world of advanced level free diving. I honestly was a little bit skeptical that after 35 years of free diving there was anything left to learn, I could not have been more wrong. I am so glad that I was able to attend and highly recommend this class to any and all spearos interested in understanding their abilities and their limitations. The rescue techniques we learned are critical to being a safe dive buddy. As far as I know room is still available in the upcoming class so don’t delay, sign up now, you will be glad you did. There are old divers and there are bold divers but there are no old, bold divers.”

Joe C, Portland, Oregon, USA

“Yoram was a great teacher, and we all got to new levels of confidence, knowledge, and performance. The instruction was first class. I was really pleased. The camaraderie was great and the new friendships formed are a bonus.”

Max D, Foster, Oregon, USA

“Yeah, where to begin? What struck me the most was how everything came together so well, everybody’s level of achievement and positive contribution, the weather, the lake… the list goes on! As for the lessons, I’m so freakin’ grateful to have learned hook breathing, not to mention the nuts and bolts of CO2 and it’s role in our diving. The sled too was the unexpected amusement ride that was so great to experience.”

– Josh H, Portland, Oregon, USA

“The class was amazing and I learned a lot. I even surprised myself getting a 3:15 static breath hold in the pool! I never thought I’d be able to get a time like that on the 1st day. It seemed most people were averaging right around 3mins on the static. Anyone who’s on the fence about signing up, DO IT! The training will certainly improve your bottom time and spearfishing game. You won’t regret it and the training could save your life. Thanks again to Yoram.”

– Mike P, Troutdale, Oregon, USA.

“Thank you for the amazing class this weekend! I learned more than I expected and I set a new personal best depth! You are an excellent instructor and I’m looking forward to talking the level 3 class some time!”

– Calvin D, Beaverton, Oregon, USA.

“I just wanted to say that I thought your course was the best instruction I have received to date in any sporting endeavour. The way that you gave us all feedback and linked everything together was excellent and your experience really shows. The key thing though was that you gave us the tools to progress, and now that I have that I will certainly be back sometime!”

– Mitchell W, Canberra BC

“Thank you very much for the great training over weekend! Even with several years of yoga practice I’ve never been so relaxed and calm as after those Saturday and Sunday classes.”

– Nick O, Leichhardt, NSW, Australia

“Our certified freediving course was fantastic! I think Yoram’s teaching methods are very well developed and his experience shows. For example, asking us to recall things like a mini quiz, made things stick immediately. All of the material was very interesting (even the theory part) and most things were completely novel to me. From the practical part, I valued Yoram’s generous feedback and tips on my techniques the most. I felt that I improved so much in those few sessions we had in the water. Also, I was happy that safety was a huge part of the course. This is so important in this sport! I would recommend this course to all beginner/intermediate freedivers and spearos out there!”

– Andrius M, Maroubra., NSW, Australia

“Thank you Yoram, you are a fantastic instructor and very patient. Anyone wanting to try Freediving, improve their lung capacity for surfing, spear fishing or any other sport should definitely do some training with you!”

– Rebecca W, Riverwood, NSW, Australia

“Awesome group. Fantastic instructor. Thanks again. What a fun and challenging weekend.”

– Kerstin K, North Bondi, NSW, Australia

“Thanks a lot for the free diving course, I really learnt some things I have been doing wrong for so long and I really understand now the safety aspect of free diving.”

– Dean O, Sydney, NSW, Australia

– Arnaud S, Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia.

What an amazing experience! We booked last minute our AIDA cert 2. From first contact they were very helpful and always answering our questions.
Extremely friendly staff including our drivers who picked us up and drives us back.
The place is clearly new and clean, with free wifi and breakfast included…. strong coffee!
Christian, Our instructor, was very professional. He understood our limits and challenged us to challenge ourselves.
His patience is priceless! My boyfriend had problems with his ears and Christian always find different ways to control this issue. We are very grateful and will be back for more challenge!

“Freedive with confidence and a smile on your lips”
I had my first freediving experience with Ocean Prana and absolutely loved it!
Marine, Yoram and every fellow freediver greeted me as soon as I came in and Wildor (my instructor) made sure I always felt safe and confident – no rushing through the drills. Afterall, that’s essential to stay calm, focus and freedive.
They take care of everything for you (arrange accommodation, lunch, equipment and even transportation, if you need it), are happy to help and give you some tips to entertain yourself while in Amed.
I’d definitely recommend anyone who wants to try freediving do come here and let them do what they do best: help you have one of the nicest experiences exploring the underwater world.
It’s a completely different sensation, as compared to scuba diving, while staying more focused on yourself and the changing power the water has on you.
Looking forward to come back!

“Amazing experience!”
My fiancee an I stayed in Ocean Prana for one week. She did Aida 1* and I did Aida 2* course. I have done some spearfishing before but this course improved my skills a lot! Cristian did really good job when coaching us! I finished Aida 2* easily and then did also Aida 3*! That course took my freediving to another level! I did many dives past 30m! 6 months ago I could only dream about it!
Ocean Prana has awesome facilities! So nice bamboo houses. All the necessary equipment for learning is available there. Staff is very friendly! Special thanks to Marine for organizing everything we needed for us!
I can’t wait to come back and finish Aida 4* with you guys!

“Great Experience!”
After years of wanting to learn to freedive I recently had the opportunity to do so and Ocean Prana Bali proved to be a great place to begin my freediving journey… Despite booking last minute (the evening before) the whole team were very friendly and helpful. The location in Jemeluk Bay, Amed and the new premises are excellent with the space being a very comfy place to hangout, meet new people and learn. The course itself was led by Will who was a great instructor and we all came away surprised at how much we were able to achieve over the two days. The highlight being a trip to the Liberty wreck in nearby Tulumban. The weekly BBQ was fun and my daughter was also invited and made to feel welcome. This was my 3rd visit to Bali but first time in Amed and I was pleased to discover a beautiful (and much more tranquil) place than the south. Altogether this was a highly recommended experience… special thanks to Marine and Will, wish you all the best for the future 🙂

“Safely pushing the extremes with good vibes”
I did my AIDA 2&3 with Ocean Prana. After some shopping around and not being helped properly at other places, I arrives here. From the beginning I felt comfortable and everything was handled adequate. All equipment is new and of high standard. The instructor, Will, is very easy going, relaxed and give clear instructions and feedback. During the whole course I felt a 100% safe, which helped me relax and progress. The lunch is included, so you don’t need to worry about that. You can fully focus on your challenge! 😉 For the people who like yoga… you can do that here aswell.
“Yoga classes”
Over the course of two months I have attended yoga classes on a regular basis at Ocean Prana. The Teachers Via, Nathalie and Ryan where amazing! I have learned so much from them and definitely gained a lot of flexibility. All the instructors make the classes suitable for all different levels they make sure beginners don’t feel like they are actual beginners and challenge the advanced. Such a great experience. Not only the yoga classes but the whole vibe in OP is amazing. They are so welcoming and friendly. Definitely pay them a visit if you want to join the best Yoga classes in Amed!
“Awesome freedive traning!!”
A beautiful bamboo construction across the road from the best part of the beach in Amed, is Ocean prana. Marine in the reception was extremely helpful answering questions over the phone, getting us cheap transport from kuta and finding a beautiful place to stay 5 minutes walk from the center. She also showed us where to go in the area on bike and made a lovely coffe!
After the warm welcome from Marine we talked with Wildor A.K.A Will. Awesome freedive instructor! Very knowledgeable about his work and good at fitting the traning to your individual needs! All in all we had a fantastic time at Ocean Prana. I haven’t been much around Bali but it’s definitely the best place and the best experience I had in Bali! We even walked around to all the freedive centers in Amed and Ocean Prana was definitely the most friendly and helpful!
Many thanks to the good crew at Ocean Prana for an awesome time and good instructions!! All best to you guys!
